How to Install a Double Handle Shower Mixer

Compared to a single handle shower mixer, a double handle shower mixer has two handles - one for hot water and another for cold water. A double handle mixer is easy to use, but it requires additional time to reach the desired temperature. Mechanical mixers are easy to use, but they still require time to get to the desired temperature. You can also choose a shower mixer with one lever. The good news is that a mechanical mixer is simple to install. However, a double handle shower mixer is not for everyone.

Safety features

A double handle shower mixer should come with two safety features, such as dual user safety systems and a non-return valve. A dual user safety system is essential in preventing bacterial growth and ensuring anti-scald protection. A non-return valve is not suitable for all bathrooms. In addition, a single handle shower mixer can have a lower price tag than a thermostatic tap. Safety features of a double handle shower mixer vary, depending on its style and design.

Thermostatic mixing valves provide a safe and even flow of water in the shower. They limit the temperature of the water, preventing scalding or shocks due to sudden changes in water temperature. This feature prevents water from overheating when the mixer is turned off or on. Thermostatic mixers have rounded corners, which further reduce the risk of falls or scalding. Thermostatic mixers also offer shelves made of safety glass, which give enough space for bathroom utensils.

Control valves

When installing a double handle shower mixer, the first step is to determine the type of valve you need. You can install a single handle valve if the shower head is attached directly to the mixer, or two handles to control the temperature and water flow of all the outlets. If the mixer does not have any controls, the other two outlets will have on/off switches and shut-off stops. This setup will also be more convenient in multi-family complexes.

Thermostatic valves are the most common type of valve used on double-handle shower mixers. They sense water temperature by a wax insert that expands or contracts according to the desired temperature. This valve prevents freezing and scalding, and maintains the temperature to within one degree. Another type of valve is known as a diverter. It diverts water from a cold and hot tap, and may be located in the tub as a single knob on a standalone shower.

Installation

If you've recently purchased a new shower, you might be wondering how to install a double handle shower mixer. To install this faucet, you'll need to remove the current handle and union. To do this, turn off the main water supply to the bathroom. It's located behind the house or in the garage. The valve is located near the shower spout. Turn it to shut off the water and wait until all the water is off before starting.

Most mixers come with two cross handles that attach to the body of the fixture. The hot and cold water feeds are to the left and right, respectively. Once installed, the mixer valve closes by seating against a seal that should be changed annually. Ceramic disc valves are more durable and user-friendly, requiring only a quarter or half turn to operate. If the valve leaks, it's important to replace it. A double handle shower mixer can be installed in a single or five-hole bath.
